Travels in Canada

Well, the time draws near when I must leave this place here in Hamilton and venture Southward to visit old friends in Watkins Glen, NY... been a busy week here!! Three (3) trips into Toronto for various things... about an hour+ drive each way, but we made a day of it every trip... spent one day at the Toronto Public Library delving into old issues of Popular Mechanics, Musician, etc. only to discover that the copies they had were devoid of advertising... a "special" archival edition, consecutive page numbers for the entire year's worth of magazine... not what we were hoping to find...

Another trip to pick up Tim's wife Jane, who is living in Toronto mostly until she finishes her work on her Master's degree in 3 weeks... that trip also included a trip to the 12th Fret music store, where I fell victim to GAS (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome) and bought a '36 Gibson L-00 in wonderful shape... incredible guitar... they're shipping it to me so that I can avoid the duties that would occur if I tried to carry it across the border with me. Just what I need, another guitar!! But this one is a keeper, and will become part of my ready arsenal of instruments for gigging... and recording...

All in all, the trip has been very fruitful thus far, with Tim & I hammering out the basic format of the Slingerland book, setting a rough timetable for publishing, and lining out our respective searches... should come together nicely... I envision lots of e-mails with attachments starting to fly back and forth in a few weeks, all with attachments! I've found a hotel in Chicago about 2 blocks from the Historical Society (where I hope to be able to find all of the missing info that I need), and actually found some pretty good rates, for Chicago!! Now to find a time when they're available... my first two picks of dates didn't work!!

Feeling musically guilty... have hardly played this entire trip... but lots of talking, planning, laughing, thinking... must have been time for a short break from music... that will change once I get home and get the routine going... I have 4 guitars waiting to be glued back together in some form or other: top on one, neck on another, and backs on 2 others... that will keep me busy for a couple of days.... only have enough spool clamps to do 1 at a time, so will do the top (resale) and neck (probably a keeper) one day, and then work thru the other two in the next two days... plus have a nice SS Stewart archtop to finish cleaning up the top on after gluing it up a few weeks ago...

Will be listing all kinds of stuff on eBay, several guitars, odd books and CD's, etc. Something to keep the cash moving inward :-)
